Model Asia Europe Meeting 2015

Programme Feature: Model Asia Europe Meeting 2015

Model Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) 2015 was an initiative by the ASEM Young Leaders Network in partnership with the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the European Union (EU) Centre in Singapore. The event was held from 10-12 April 2015 at the National University of Singapore where about 100 youth leaders role-played as leaders representing the 53 ASEM member delegations. The initiative aimed to augment the understanding of the ASEM processes amongst youth leaders in Asia and Europe. The three-day programme incorporated elements of the actual ASEM Summit as well as complementary features that further enhanced the diplomatic, consensus-building, negotiation and persuasion skills of our youth leaders.

Model ASEM 2015 aimed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Allow youth leaders to gain better knowledge and awareness of the ASEM member countries.
  • Offer youth leaders the opportunity to engage in intense discussions, while emphasising mutual respect and tolerance.
  • Provide a channel for young people from ASEM member countries to share their views on Asia-Europe relations and cooperate on a common vision.
  • Allow youth leaders to learn skills and build capacities in the fields of research, public speaking, teamwork, communication, problem-solving and consensus-building.
  • Enable youth leaders to develop a greater appreciation of the complexity of international relations.
  • Facilitate networks among youth leaders from ASEM countries who are potentially future national leaders of their countries.

The theme for Model ASEM 2015 was ‘The Silk Road Renaissance: Redefining Asia-Europe Sociocultural and Economic Engagement'. The outcomes of the deliberations at this event would be channelled to the leaders at the 11th ASEM Summit in Mongolia in 2016.
