The S$100 million S Rajaratnam Endowment (SRE) was set up by Temasek in 2010, in conjunction with the 45th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, to recognise Singapore’s first Foreign Minister, one of our pioneering leaders.
Its objective is to achieve development, peace and stability in the region by deepening international friendships, promoting regional cooperation, and fostering a greater and common understanding of international rules, based on the twin pillars of good governance and sustainability.
Temasek Foundation Connects, a Singapore-based non-profit philanthropic organisation that funds and supports programmes which seek to build bridges and partnerships, and promote dialogue and mutual understanding across international communities and markets, provides oversight to the S Rajaratnam Endowment.
Incorporated on 5 December 2013, the SRE is overseen by a Board under the chairmanship of Mr Wong Kan Seng, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore and Chairman of Ascendas-Singbridge Pte Ltd. The founding directors are Prof Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador-at-Large, Republic of Singapore and Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities; Ambassador Bilahari Kausikan, Policy Advisor with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Singapore; and Dr Teh Kok Peng, Senior Advisor, China International Capital Corporation Limited.
The Chairman and founding directors of the SRE are also members of the Advisory Board of the Singapore Forum, the flagship event of the SRE. They are joined by five prominent foreign members on the Advisory Board. They are Mr Long Yongtu, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, People’s Republic of China and former Secretary-General of Boao Forum for Asia; Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, India; Mr Chairul Tanjung, Founder and Chairman of CT Corp and former Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Republic of Indonesia; Dr Junichi Ujiie, Senior Advisor to Nomura Holdings Board, former Member of Monetary Authority of Singapore’s International Advisory Board and former Chairman, Nomura Holdings, Inc., Japan; and Mr Park Joon-woo, Chairman, The Sejong Institute, former Senior Secretary to the President for Political Affairs, Republic of Korea and former Korean Ambassador to Singapore.
Apart from the Singapore Forum, the SRE also supports other programmes and partnerships that are aligned with the work and areas of interest that the late Mr S Rajaratnam was known for. Besides international relations, politico-economic, geostrategic and social issues, other areas include culture, journalism and literary arts. In addition, the SRE will also support programmes that aim to cultivate and engage past, present and future leaders.
